ZENYATTA! My girl! She may have lost but her legacy will never be forgotten! Recently I have been doing work for Team Zenyatta.. I have designed some of their identity including several different logos for shirts, hats and more that were sold this past weekend.

The image you see here is a sneak peak at some concept art for a comic/comic strip featuring Zenyatta in a magical forest. The concept is based around Zenyatta possessing magical powers, and coming from a magical land. On Saturday 11/6/10, Zenyatta lost for the time in her amazing career. She retires at 19-1.

Zenyatta is the most amazing creature I have ever seen. I met her in July to take some reference photos. She was so impressive and her were full of life and intelligence. Zenyatta was so soft and velvet like to the touch. And the muscles–oh her muscles were incredible. She was beautiful.

So needless to say Zenyatta’s loss was very sad but regardless, at 19-1 and losing your only race by a nose is not such a bad career.

We will miss you Zenyatta.

HEAVY METAL MAGAZINE ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST DIGITAL COMIC

October 31, 2010 (Los Angeles, CA) – In big news in my life–Heavy Metal magazine today announced plans to publish its very first digital comic, Heavy Metal Presents: Gates, written and illustrated by Hal Hefner–ME!

The official site of the sci-fi comic – gates.heavymetal.com – also went online today, where fans of the legendary magazine can view a trailer, story synopsis, character biographies and more. And as time goes on more goodies will be added including TONS of backstory tidbits carefully placed online.

The comic will officially launch on 1.1.11. and be updated weekly with pages.

Heavy Metal Presents: Gates centers on a specially-conceived young man, named Gates, living a wretched existence in an isolated negative utopian society, deep within the caverns of an industrial mountain complex. When he breaks free from his colony he is thrust onto a lush alien world filled with strange creatures, and ruled by Soloman—a nightmarish, god-like overlord. With his organic plant based technology, Soloman captures the humans and is instantly obsessed with the extermination of mankind and all life on the world. With the help of a tribe of intelligent creatures, Gates must learn to use Soloman’s organic technology to defeat him and take back a planet which is rightfully his. Gates is an epic tale of discovery and adventure addressing ideas of identity, society, politics, and philosophy, as well as modern concerns, including environmentalism, evolution, and the unintended consequences of scientific and technological experimentation.

Heavy Metal Presents: Gates will also feature a music soundtrack, as did the Heavy Metal film released in 1981 that boasted the likes of Stevie Nicks, DIO, Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Journey and more. Musical Artists will include Inside The Black, LoveKrafty and Odd Wedding.

In 1998, I was 23 years old. My dad had just passed away after a long battle with lung and brain cancer. I was living in the often rainy and seemingly always gray skies of, Rochester NY–A Negative Utopian mood in itself of sorts. I just finished getting my bachelor’s degree at RIT in illustration and I was doing some freelance artwork for a few role playing game companies and t-shirt designers while working at Media Play ( a wannabe Barnes and Noble). I was at a crossroads in life and the beckoning of manhood pestered me every day. Reality was a bitch and it was obvious that becoming a freelance illustrator and still living like a human being were going unrealistic. So I decided to put life on pause and enrolled into grad school at RIT while I figured life out.

Needless to say this was the pivotal point when I got hammered by creativity, inspiration and the culmination of  recent years of mental and cultural growth. Since I was a child I had been on crash course with information. Information I couldn’t always get in school. I was always drawn to science fiction and often times found it more compelling and realistic than “real life”. As a child, as far back as I could remember I was obsessed with the Twilight Zone. I loved that show because every tale had a warning to mankind and was a social commentary for how careless, stupid, arrogant and clueless the human race really was. In science fiction you could call out people, cultures, governments, religions and more–and you didn’t have to apologize like you do in “real life”. I found sci-fi to be more truthful and for the last few years my art had evolved into this direction. I still am not sure if it was consciously or subconsciously but sci-fi art was where I wanted to be.

I had spent the last few years of college engulfed in various forms of intelligent science fiction related media. From music like Pink Floyd, Human League, Bauhaus and Kraftwerk to books like George Orwell’s 1984, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, Deus Irae by Philip K. Dick /Roger Zelazny and H.G.Wells’ the Island of Dr. Moreau to movies like Rene Laloux’s Fantastic Planet, Dune, Planet of the Apes, Star Wars and much more. Ironically it was at this time than I began to find a new appreciation for the 1981 animated Heavy Metal Movie as well. I also delved deep into studying ancient cultures such as the Egyptians, Sumerians, the ancient Eastern world, the Aztecs and the  American Indians. I studied Gods, myths, legends, religions, customs, rituals, sacrifices, governments, laws and anything I could get my hands on. Joseph Campbell, Timothy Leary and other great twentieth century thinkers helped to open my mind. And boy did my mind open. It was when I discovered the roots of Christianity in ancient, ancient Egypt that the switch flipped, my mid exploded and I began to imagine the future of mankind–from my OWN point of view.

I then met a guy in Ithaca named Don Reddick.  Reddick owned a small RPG company named Fractal Dimensions and published a magazine called Fractal Spectrum. He and I became friends and he  started giving me freelance work. It was right around this time that my art was improving and my mind was growing. I had come up with this whacked out futuristic story about a tribe of humans that landed on Jupiter’s moon Europa, only to find that it was inhabited by a robotic overlord that was a byproduct of greedy power-hungry humans, long since dead. This overlord manipulated everything on the lush planet, teeming with life and he had created a new race of human animal hybrids, that I called Animoids. After pitching Reddick the story, he agreed to make it an RPG as well as a comic book.

So I began cranking out drawings, paintings and more.  And my art and ideas kept getting better and better. After deciding to sell Fractal Dimensions to another publisher, I parted ways with Reddick, took my ideas and decided that  I was going to head west, to Los Angeles and see what luck I could turn in California. I was still reeling from the loss of my dad and dissatisfied with my life in Rochester. I had a very nice girlfriend but my emotional unrest and my yearning for more caused the demise of our relationship. I believed in my idea, which I had christened with the unoriginal title “the Conquest of Europa”, I believed in myself and now I had nothing to lose. So I sold everything material and useless to me except my computer, art supplies, clothes, books and music–packed it all into my car and headed to L.A.

When I arrived in LA in September of 1999, I had never been to California but I knew it was where I needed to be. It took me a while to get settled but by January 1st of 2000, I had my own apartment, a cat, a full time job as a production artist/graphic designer and a freelance gig as a cartoonist doing dirty cartoons for various adult publications. Life was cool. I had now entered the digital age and Photoshop beckoned. I had been drawing and painting since I was 3–with traditional tools such as pencils, paint, markers, ink etc. Now a new media I had scratched the surface of in college had become my favorite tool to create art with. Photoshop was now my new toy. So I began to work, honing my skills and evolving as I absorbed LA, and all of the new people, places and forms of alternative education.

I then moved to West LA, near the ocean and enlisted some writing help for a while. We refined some ideas and generated some new ones for the project I created back in rainy ol’ Rochester NY. We laid out a good framework and a script and renamed it Ascension–but something seemed to be missing. When I felt that we had taken the project as far as we could, I decided to branch out on my own once again. Working solo was a great move, and from here it evolved beyond my wildest dreams. Loose ends became tied up and new ideas that reflected today’s current religious, philosophical and political issues came to light. Over the course of the next four years the project would evolve into what it is today–GATES. Back in 2007 I had a comic book publisher interested in publishing it as a book/graphic novel. BUT when they tried to screw me in a heavy handed deal, I simply walked away, following my gut instinct to run. Smart move for me!

Now, present day August 2010–I am married with 2 wonderful daughters and living in Culver City, CA. Gates has become a reality and has landed with the right company. With Gates, I will be launching Heavy Metal Magazine’s first online comic franchise. I cannot say in any number of words how honored I am to be working with Heavy Metal Magazine. Kevin Eastman is just an inspirational man and was responsible for creating the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles before acquiring Heavy Metal back in the mid 90′s. To be a friend of his and to be working on a Heavy metal property is just amazing.

I’ll never forget watching the Heavy Metal movie as a teenager with my buddies. From Harry Canyon to Den, we loved it. And somehow, some way I ALWAYS knew I would end up working with them. Maybe it was fate, luck, the law of attraction or just an anomaly of space and time, but here I am. Gates has found a home with a magazine and a franchise I have adored since I was a teen growing up in small town upstate NY.

As I closed the deal yesterday for the comic, I said to Kevin Eastman, “Ya know I’m destined to be here, working with you. My first name is sci-fi,(HAL: like the super computer in Kubrick’s 2001) and my last name is (HEFNER: porn, like Hugh Hefner/Playboy). That’s Heavy Metal dude.”  He laughed and agreed.

ABOUT GATES:

GATES is young man living a wretched existence in an isolated colony of humans. Deep within the caverns of an industrial mountain complex, his society is ruled by a totalitarian government called the ConGenement who controls all facets of life.

The ConGenement manages the colony’s reproduction process and all people are procreated genetically susceptible to drugs that dull free thinking. Ambitionless citizens believe that life cannot exist outside of the colony’s confines and are obliviously obedient slaves to their ConGenement masters.

But Gates is special—He was conceived naturally, in secret. Unlike other citizens Gates thinks independently because his body is immune to any affects that the ConGenement regulated drugs induce. Gates has avoided ConGenement detection until recently when he is forced into a shaky partnership with a crooked ConGenement official who has uncovered his secret. In a quest to prove that life exists outside of the colony, plans go awry and Gates and two unsuspecting participants, ADENA and KANO, are stranded in a forbidden land that is not supposed to exist.

What they discover is a twisted, alien environment flourishing with life and dominated by SOLOMAN – a nightmarish, god-like overlord. With his organic plant based technology, Soloman captures the three humans and is instantly obsessed with the experimentation of them and the extermination of mankind.

While in Soloman’s clutches, Gates and Adena are befriended by an ANIMOID (hybrid human-animal) named NEKTU. Believing that Gates is a figure from his tribe’s legends, he engineers an escape from Soloman’s fortress. As they escape, Gates steals Soloman’s SCARAB SEED, which is the root of his power. On a treacherous journey outward they trek through the catacombs of the fortress and discover hundreds of Soloman’s cloned bodies. Gates, Adena and Nektu battle their way out and retreat into the lush, untamed jungle of the planet. Nektu leads them to his tribe who adopt the humans. They struggle to survive but for the first time experience what it means to truly be alive.

In a climactic final battle with Soloman, the fate of the world and all its inhabitants are at stake.  Gates must utilize the power of the scarab seed to become one with nature and something more than human to defeat Soloman.

When I was 18 years old…I saw Crop Circles.

These Crop Circles were in the State of New York – Vickerman Hill, Columbia Center / Herkimer / Mohawk Valley, Herkimer County ( reported on June 21, 1993)

I was there. I saw this and it was crazy. I stood in the middle of this crop circle and got the chills.

There were Four circles were  linked by pathways that appeared on a steep hill. The circle diameters were: 20’5”, 45’, 43’5”, and 88’.

All the circles were slightly elliptical in the North-South direction. Three of the circles were swirled clockwise, with one circle counter-clockwise. Two of the pathways were found to extend about halfway to the centers of two of the circles, while the rest of the pathway ends terminated at the meeting point with the circles. Areas of ‘randomly-downed’ crop also in the field. Expulsion cavities and lateral node splitting was found. BOL’s reported.

I was driving by one night with two buddies. I actually stumbled upon a pink light in the field. I was scared for sure but more curious than frightened. We investigated to find that it was actually people doing research! One was a Japaneese man and NYU scientisist studying psychic brainwaves. This girl who was with this man and another white gentleman claimed that she was abducted and brought there originally by a UFO. She was hooked up to this machine, which was wrapped around her head, like a headband, while sitting in the middle of the circle.

These formations showed up in Mary Pyc’s oatfield and have never left my mind since 1993.

The Syracuse Herald-Journal on 8-2-1993 reports that a passing truck driver claims he witnessed several objects hovering in the air above the field just before the formation was discovered, andthat thunderstorms were reported in the area around the time of discovery. W.C. Levengood analyzed samples taken from the formation and found significant node bending as compared to the controls, ‘expulsion cavities’, growth suppression in germination studies, and reduced electrical conductivity (Alpha Change) in the bract tissue surrounding the seeds. NY State Police turned up no evidence to suggest a hoax.

Good times.

Aaron Russo (February 14, 1943 – August 24, 2007)

Aaron was a friend of mine who my wife and I met through our dear friends David and Brian. His personality was larger than life. He was a New Yorker through and through, in his mannerisms and even his smile. My wife was pregnant with our first child when we met him and he rubbed her belly and used hos psychic powers to predict we would have a boy…but he was wrong.

Wikipedia calls him, “an American entertainment businessman, filmmaker, libertarian political activist, and a 9/11 truth activist.” Which in essence he was surely all of those things. Aaron made his mark in Hollywood producing the Dan Akroyd, Eddie Murphy (when he was still funny) movie, Trading Places. He also produced the movie Wise Guys, and Bette Midler’s The Rose.

He was a big music enthusiast, and once owned the nightclub Kinetic Playground in which he hosted various famous rock bands and musicians such as The Who, Janis Joplin, The Grateful Dead, Iron Butterfly, Rotary Connection and Jefferson Airplane among others. He was the first person to book Led Zeppelin in the United States club Kinetic Playground. Russo also was manager for The Manhattan Transfer and Bette Midler from 1972 to 1979.

He was even awarded an Emmy for a Bette Midler TV special, and the soundtrack to The Rose, which he produced, was certified gold and in 1989, Russo co-directed, Rude Awakening. All in all Russo’s films received six Academy Award nominations and two of Russo’s films were nominated for Golden Globe award

But it was later in Aaron’s life that I met him. He had left the commercial entertainment world and had begun to create documentaries–Because he was pissed off at the current state of our political, social and economic affairs in the United States. His first documentary was called Mad as Hell, which calls into question the current state of governmental affairs.

However, his best and most successful movie was called America: Freedom to Fascism, which investigates the breadth of the Sixteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and the Federal Reserve System. My wife and I and our friends David and Brian were lucky enough to get a VIP screening in Beverly Hills with Aaron, his family, Ron Paul and other people associated with revealing the injustice of justice. This film was filled with evidence, interviews and stats that are very solid and will turn your stomach at the evil that our forefathers have bestowed upon us.

Shortly after he released this film, and after a six year battle with bladder cancer, Russo died on August 24, 2007. 3 years ago today.

I along with my friend David attended his funeral and a wonderful party for him at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip. It was a perfect way to say goodbye to this man–with music, love and cheer. Some say his cancer was the result of his hatred for the government and those in power who had wanted him gone for a long time–finally got their wish and maybe played a hand in it. But we will never know.

Here’s why they hated him…

So Aaron, it is in your memory that I raise a shot of whiskey. I say, “fuck the power, I think for myself, I will always question authority, I will trust no one and I will never be led to slaughter like blind sheep!” Aaron Russo, thank you for what you did, for opening my eyes and enlightening me to the way the world really is. It’s not pretty but it is what it is and as a father of two daughters, I must do what I can to protect and provide for them.

Below you will find some video clips of some of Aaron’s greatest hits. Goodbye old friend. Peace
